Privatization Policy - The Nigerian Situation Today

Is there any need for me to start this article with the definition of the word privatization? No, I don't think it is necessary but for the fact that there are those who might not know its meaning I'll give a little summary of what the word "Privatization" means. Privatization means the act of transferring either full or part of the ownership of a public sector enterprise to private sector (private organizations or individuals). The ownership right is fully or partly given to the private sector to control and manage the enterprise. I also see it as a movement from public to private enterprise.

Privatization is purely a worldwide issue which has to be critically looked into. From the part of the world I come from (Africa) the issue of privatization is causing a big problem as people now ask if the government of the day is not able to manage and provide the services anymore. Nigeria, my country, the proposed African giant is not left out in this problem of privatization. In 1988, the Nigerian government set up a Privatization and Commercialization Committee, this committee was later renamed Technical Committee on Privatization and Commercialization (TCPC) in 1993. The committee was saddled with the responsibilities of privatizing public enterprises. This group of individuals succeeded in privatizing over 80% of the public enterprises. The citizenry were happy because at least, the services will improve. I was among those who said privatization will improve the economy because I knew more opportunities will be created by the private organizations that took over the management of these enterprises. This is because privatization has a lot of advantages such as; attracting foreign investors, cutting down on corrupt practices, good management and efficiency, creation of an open market, dismantle monopoly, improves indigenous capital market and it creates employment etc.

Today, I feel disappointed and ashamed for the Nigerian government. I am even looking at the present government as being privatized. Ask me why, my reason is that I have been able to closely monitor what the politicians are doing and came to a conclusion that the government is privatized as all they do is divert funds and amenities meant for the public to their own private use. That is another system of privatizing public enterprise. Let's not deviate from the subject matter. From recent information and investigation, 60% of the proposed privatized enterprises are, let me use the word"dead". This is because they do not exist anymore as compare to when it was managed by the government. So where are the private companies and individuals who took over the management of these public enterprises? If you still ask me, they are still the people holding the political power. I don't want to mention names or names of the proposed public enterprises that were privatized because over 60% of Nigerians are aware of this. But no one will come out to question the government, and when you do, all they will do is, give the person a political appointment so he/she can be a party to the fraud.

It will also interest Nigerians to know that government spent huge sum of money renovating the dilapidated structure of the enterprises before selling them. And I ask why? If you want to sale such enterprises, you don't need to spend money again renovating it. This is why I say it is a fraud. Rather than use billions of naira renovating something they wanted to sale, why not use the same money to take care of our roads.
