Four Ways to Be Happy Now

Break out to happiness now! Although happiness is the grand prize at the end of all of our striving, we human beings often get lost in the struggle to reach a goal. It is easy to forget that we want to make more money, lose weight, find the perfect life-partner, or win the gold medal because we believe it will make us happy.

Achieving a worthy goal feels great. But when the celebration ends, the feeling usually goes with it. That's why it never works to hold your happiness hostage to anything. We all know people who live as if they have taken vows proclaiming they will never be happy until they get that raise, buy that car, or lose those extra twenty pounds.

Here is the good news! You can be happy now, even before you fix all of those things you believe are wrong with you and our world. When you claim the happiness prize now, not only can you still reach for any goal you want, you will have more energy, enthusiasm and creativity to reach with.

Here are the four easiest ways to be happy:

Don't worry, be happy! Just as the song says, all you have to do is stop worrying and allow yourself to be happy.
Choose happiness. If you could feel any way you want to right now, what would it be? Often making a conscious choice is enough to lift you out of unhappiness.
Focus on what you want. What if you have hummed that happy song and chosen a cheery mood but you still feel awful? Most likely you do not like the way things are. Focus on what you want instead. If for example, you feel bad about being alone, focus on connecting with someone to share your life with. Nurture that desire. Keep you eyes on the prize. Be sure to focus on the vision, not the absence of it. In the state of active desire you are clear about what you want to move toward or attract to you. That is an attractive state, literally! It attracts the object of desire to you or moves you toward it.
Break out from limiting beliefs. If steps 1-3 leave you less than happy, you may be operating from a limiting or self-defeating belief. This is not so easy, but it beats getting divorced, leaving town, or plastic surgery for a chance at happiness. If you feel stuck in one of the many states of unhappiness (anger, fear, guilt, despair, boredom etc.) maybe you believe you have to feel that way. Ask yourself if that is true? What are you concerned would happen if you felt ok now, even though there is something you really want to change?

Our society, especially the media, bombards us with one big message: You need something (something they have that you do not have) in order to be happy. Fortunately that message is not true! You can claim the greatest liberty there is, your right to happiness.

Take a happiness break from the rat race. Remove you nose from the grindstone. Don't worry, be happy; choose happiness; focus on what you want; and challenge any belief that tells you to stay stuck feeling some way you do not want to feel.
