More than 100 people arrested in Oakland protests - NECN

(NECN/CNN: Oakland, California) - A march in Oakland, California Friday protested the two-year prison sentence for a former transit police officer who killed an unarmed man last year.

The group walked down several streets and was stopped by police but each time headed another direction.
Oakland's police chief says one of his officers had a gun turned on him.

That suspect has been arrested.

Another Oakland officer was reportedly hit by a car.

They are upset that Johannes Mehserle did not receive the maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the New Year's Day incident in 2009 when he shot 22-year-old Oscar Grant.

Mehserle could be released from custody in about seven months.

The shooting sparked a racial divide in Oakland after the July verdict, since Mehserle is white and Grant was black.

Chief Anthony Batts: "We arrested people ranging from illegal assembly to disturbing the peace. Currently we're estimating pretty close to 100 to 150 arrests will be made at the conclusion of this. We arrested them for, the main charge is unlawful assembly."
