RENO, Nev.—Even though they have clashed in the past, the Sierra Club and Nevada Mining Association are endorsing Democratic Sen. Harry Reid in his race against Republican Sharron Angle.
Political analysts say the endorsements are a testimony to the power of Reid's position as Senate majority leader.
But Angle spokesman Jerry Stacy says the endorsements are "absolutely meaningless" in a state with the nation's highest unemployment rate.
The Nevada Mining Association cites Reid's longtime support of the industry and ability to ensure that any reform of the 1872 mining law is reasonable.
While it opposes Reid's position on mining, the Sierra Club applauds his efforts on behalf of renewable energy, climate change, wilderness, Lake Tahoe and Walker Lake.
