PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island independent candidate for governor Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) has loaned his campaign $500,000, bringing the total he's now loaned himself to $1.6 million.
Chafee's acting campaign manager, Mike Trainor, said Chafee cut the check over the weekend.
Chafee, a former Republican U.S. senator, has trailed Democratic rival Frank Caprio in fundraising. The state's general treasurer has raised about $2.7 million. He's also had the help of the Democratic Governors Association, which has spent more than $1 million on TV ads just this month.
Republican John Robitaille (ROH'-bih-teye) has trailed in fundraising, but this week got help from the Republican Governors Association, which is spending more than $400,000 on TV ads.
Current Republican Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEER'-ee) is term limited.
