The Essence of Love: Knowing Who You Really Are

I am writing this article at the request of my 17 year old niece, Cassidy, who lost her mother (my little sister) a year ago this month. Cassidy asked me to write about the difference between loving someone and being in love with someone. So, let's take a look at love from the energetic viewpoint.

Love Through the Ages

Anyone who has read poetry or classic literature has seen love compared to a red, red rose or a summer's day; why is that? It is quite simply because love makes us feel much the same as a perfect summer's day or a beautiful flower. The real question is why? Why does love feel so much like the things that focus us on the sweetness of life? And why are sunsets, summer days full of life, and flowers so sweet to us?

Another historical aspect of love can be found in how we categorize love: brotherly love (the basis of the Masonic Order and other fraternities), the love of family, the love of country, self love, the love of friends, the love of nature and, yes, the feeling of being in love.

The Essence of Love is Alignment

Love is alignment? Alignment with what? Alignment with yourself. That's right, the essence of love is finding something or someone that focuses you back to the essence of who you really are. Moreover, romantic love or being in love is not so much about finding your soul mate as it is about finding a mate that has an energetic resonance with you that focuses you toward aligning with your own soul. Some call it inner self, some call it soul, some call it essence; the name is unimportant. What is important is that you realize that you are an eternal being and you exist in both the physical and non-physical simultaneously. In fact, the larger portion of you is always non-physical (which is why you can connect with others who are physically distant). We don't come here from the non-physical and then one day return, a portion of the essence that is "us" comes into the physical while the majority of our inner self remains in alignment with all things at the higher energetic levels of the non-physical. As teachers through history from Jesus to Ester and Jerry Hicks have communicated, the power of love is the power of attunement with who you really are. The Name of God is not "I Am That I Am," that's a mistranslation. The Name of God, the moniker of true power, is "I Am Who I Am" and love is the feeling we get when we find someone or something that focuses us back to who we are as who we are is a sweet thing indeed.

Different Kinds of Love? Not Really

There are really not different kinds of love, just different levels of alignment with who we really are. Artificial societal restrictions aside, one can be in love with anyone or anything. Every great achiever in history was in love with something or someone. That love focused them into alignment with who they really were and that alignment made them unstoppable. I once saw a greeting card that summed it up nicely: "I don't love you for who you are, I love you for who I am when I'm with you." In the end, we are attracted to a life partner and "fall in love" because they consistently focus us to see who we really are and feel the bliss that comes from that knowing.

OK, so what about family? I love my family but I had no choice about them! This is perhaps the most important lesson of all when it comes to love. We, every one of us, can love anyone we choose. Why? Because it's not about them, it's about us. If we choose to focus on the aspects of a person that makes us feel good we are choosing alignment with our inner self. And, in choosing to see the true self in them, we will find the true self in ourselves which, without exception, will result in the feeling we call love.

So, my dearest Cassidy, the difference between loving someone and being in love with someone is simply a difference of degree. Do they make you feel good (focus you toward who you really are) or do they consistently remind you that you are an all-powerful creator and the Universe is at your command? By the way, you can be in love with more than one person and gender matters not. Remember, love is about your alignment with your inner self, not them!

Knowing How To Properly Use A Dictionary Can Help With Research

Curricula for the English Composition course usually include review of fundamental language arts essentials such as grammar, usage, and mechanics. The instruction includes various strategies and techniques that help students learn to read for comprehension and write well-crafted papers. Reference and resource materials are vital for English Composition. Even with the invention of computer spell-check and thesaurus, students should still be familiar with the traditional dictionary and how to use to properly use it.

The dictionary contains a lot of information. Learning to use it efficiently can help students find various facts very quickly. In addition to listing word definitions, the dictionary has several features that aid in understanding every aspect of the entry word. The entry word is the word that is being searched for. Entry words are always listed in alphabetically order.

Guide words are the words at the top of each dictionary page. Each top page of the dictionary includes the first and last word that are on the overall page. Guide words are positioned in this location to help you quickly locate the entry word. Once you find your entry word, you will see a breakdown of the word into syllables, which are typically separated by dots. This feature can help with pronunciation.

Phonetic respelling helps to pronounce an entry word. Each word displays its phonetic respelling. In this spelling, accent marks show where a word has a primary and secondary stress. The dictionary usually has a pronunciation key section at the foot of each page (in some cases every other page) that explains the various phonetic symbols. This helps with sounding out the word for correct pronunciation.

Each entry word is labeled as a part of the speech. The part of speech is usually abbreviated (e.g. n., v., adj., adv., etc.), which in long form is noun, verb, adjective, and adverb. This parcel of information is essential because it gives you a clue as to how to properly use the word. One particular word can be used in several different ways. When you understand the part of speech for an entry word, you can appropriately use the word in the context that it is required to be in.

Definitions explain the meaning of a word. If there is more than one definition, each one is usually numbered and examples, sometimes in the form of a sentence, are included to make the distinction between word usages. The etymology refers to the history or origin of a word, and it usually appears in brackets at the end of a definition. Knowing word origins come in handy when studying/reading historical dialogue and transcripts.

Homographs show that some words have the same spelling but different meanings and origins. They are usually distinguished by being listed as separate entries. Each word has a superscript number identifying that the two words, although spelled the same, have two distinct meanings and historical origin. For example, some dictionaries lists sash1 and sash2; the first is a ribbon with its word origin in Arabic, and the second is a frame with its word origin being French.

As you can see, there are many sections to a dictionary and all of them provide significant amount of information for every single word you look up. This information is not only helpful for pronouncing a word or understanding its definition, but it is also useful research information that can be used when writing papers for any class, not just those involving college English. If you are earning an online college degree, you might find it useful to pick a credible online dictionary to use regularly.
