The Importance of Taking Time to Give Thanks

Did you know that in the United States more people go home for Thanksgiving than for Christmas? And yet, no presents are exchanged. It is simply a time to return home and share a meal, conversation, time with close family.Taking time to give thanks is seen as important.

Let's consider areas where it's important to stop, take time and give thanks:

- Many of us take our health for granted. We push ourselves to the limits, disregard stress levels, eat and sleep erratically. It's only when we or someone close to us receives a health warning that we start to appreciate the importance of being more respectful of our health. But taking better care of ourselves minimises stress and improves our quality of life. And then if we do occasionally need to cope with stressful times we are healthier and better equipped to do so.

- Family and friends are often such an accepted part of our lives that we forget to give thanks for them, their support, annoying habits and sometimes unsolicited interference and advice. Finding ways to value and appreciate these relationships and learn to interact appropriately with others are important elements in becoming a functioning human being, able to live a satisfying and successful life in the big wide world away from home and familiar surroundings.

- Often the weather provides us with many reasons to complain but we should take time to give thanks for the seasons, even if we sometimes experience them all in one day! As Winter approaches we can give thanks and consider the different nuances of each season. We can enjoy our homes in different ways throughout the year. Celebrate family, friends, by making our homes more cosy and intimate in the Winter months.

- Many of us may compare ourselves to others. We may see other people as having luxurious homes, wonderful clothes, regular holidays to exotic locations, enviable lifestyles. But those people may well wish that they spent less time at work, more time together as a family. Often business and professional success brings compromises in other areas of life. Finding a balance is often the major challenge.

- Minor inconveniences often bring unexpected opportunities to be appreciative. Forgetting our mobile phone allows us quiet time for ourself. The day without our car means we have to walk and consequently discover surprising things about our neighbourhood. Even the disappointment of being let down enables us to find out how resourceful we are, as we're forced to find a solution to the situation.

- When a special relationship ends badly an important consideration is to remind ourselves how important the relationship was to us once upon a time. We learned to love, share, co-exist and that's something to be thankful for, even if it didn't work out as we would have liked. We may also have learned what we don't want and that's important too.

- Similarly, when someone close to us dies it is hoped that eventually we'll be able to give thanks for their life, the time we shared together, the importance they played in our life, what they meant to us.

- Having a job we dislike can be improved by an adjustment in our perspective. Being thankful for having a job, earning money, having a reason to get up in the morning, something that many people would be grateful for can help to improve our outlook. Using our dissatisfaction as the impetus to take control of our life can be a valuable catalyst for change. It can propel us to take action; to start studying, research what else we could do, discover viable ways to move on.

Stopping occasionally to give thanks for family and friends, the important things in life, our health, home, quality of life is important to do from time to time. Being appreciative of what we have grounds us and reminds of what really matters in life. Giving thanks provides an interlude to value what we have before we once again resume our lives.

Becoming Successful in Life - The Importance of Listening

Before you say, "come on Paul. I know the importance of listening. I suggest you stop and really take notice of the time you're talking instead of listening. I can tell you from experience as a sales leader and manager, the best sales people are listeners. They listen for the clues and what we call buying signals. The same can be said in life outside of sales.

It takes more than being a good listener to be successful. It's very important you ask the right questions. One of my favorite sayings is. "Answers rarely appear on their own. Answers only come after you have asked a question". One tip I use when I ask questions is to wait until the individual has finished what they were saying and count to three. This will seem like an eternity but you will get better at it with time. The purpose for this is, the individual spoke about what first came to their mind. It is after this dead air that the individual will come out with more information after they had a chance to think about it deeper. This is when the real good stuff comes out. We provided them with the courtesy to finish their thought. When we listen we project trust. When there is trust, they will tell us more.

How many times in your life have you heard someone say. I can never remember names. I believe the issue is that these people are not listening. What is taking place is they are thinking about what they are going to say next. Well guess what! When your thinking about what you will say next, your not listening effectively. If you start to listen intently you will remember their name. If you listen intently you project that you really care what they have to say. If you listen intently they will tell you more than they would otherwise have said.

What does all this have to do with being successful you ask? When we are talking we are expressing what we already know. When we are listening we have the opportunity to gain knowledge. Knowledge is power. Knowledge helps us with making sound decisions in life and business.

In my opinion there are four ways to gain knowledge.

To be an apprentice and gain experience working beside a master.Go to school. Guess what happens in school? 80 to 90 percent of the time is spent listening.Read about things that will expand our knowledge and provide you with expertise. Because you want to!!Listen intently from those who have knowledge and most importantly take notes when you have a chance following the conversation. Writing helps us to retain what we have heard. Think of the things we have written on napkins during a lunch meeting. Do you get my point?

In many of my recent articles I have been writing about maintaining a positive attitude. To have a positive attitude you need to be conscious of your thoughts. The same applies to listening. Slow it down and be conscious of the questions you ask and how you listen. You will find it amazing what you will learn. To be successful in life you need to be forever learning and expanding your knowledge. Being thirsty for knowledge will water the seeds of success.

• How can a Nation realize peace, justice, and equality? If there is no rule, no law, no ordinance, then imagine complete chaos and total disaster. You can't just impose a rule or a law on someone and make him follow.

• How can a Nation protect its resources and environment? Imagine a derelict jungle, that's a nation without leaders to protect its resources and environment. Survival of the fittest does not work in real human life, everything and everyone needs to be regulated.

• How about discovering a cure for cancer? Can we say that it flows naturally from within and you can simply create one in the kitchen? Or to discover a disease and its cure can be easily diagnosed by just looking at a person who's been affected? Again, you don't learn that aside from being educated.

Education is an investment. This is a regularly unrecognized fact about the importance of education.

• You build and secure your own future through education.

• A person who gets the privilege of an education is free to choose his career and professional path. Where do uneducated ones go? They scavenge job listings, compete with a more suitable applicant, go find other jobs, compete again, so on and so forth. They do not have much option but accept whatever is available.

• A stable job. A person who invests in education will be secured to land a stable job. Companies and firms prefer people who are knowledgeable rather than those who just completely rely in instincts.

• Financial security. Stable job means stable income, opportunities of pay raise, and retirement pay.

With those importance of education discussed and stated above, who will dare to say skills are just enough?
