A Perfect Life - Ways to Achieve It

Success and Happiness Define a Good Life - How to Achieve It?

There are two things you need from life to make it complete - happiness and success. Both are equally important to mark a good life yet one without the other is meaningless. Together they make a life worth living and to make yours one you need to figure out what defines a good life for you. And unless you do you cannot hope to achieve it and make a difference to the world around you. While the definition may differ from person to person, the underlying need for fulfillment lies deep in all of us.

Let us first look at happiness, its definition and how we can achieve it. According to the Merriam-Webster, happiness is defined as - "a state of well-being and contentment; joy; a satisfying experience". If you notice, no matter which way you define it, the meaning always veers towards the self. And that this where you should begin and end your journey.

Begin by daring to dream. Begin by asking yourself what you want. By giving in to your deepest desires. And when you start traveling on this path you will contentment at every step. With every milestone that you achieve you will feel a surge of satisfaction. And with every small success you will feel the proximity of your bug win and find the strength to achieve it through the true happiness that you feel by following your dream.

Next comes success. Success is defined as "favorable or desired outcome; also: the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence" - according to the Merriam-Webster. When you know what makes you happy and what your heart desires most, you will know which road to travel to achieve the heights of success. Everyone who puts in an effort will achieve some measure of success or minor results. But in order to attain greater glory one must put in more than the ordinary effort. Glory is not meant for the fearful and puny at heart. To achieve it you have to risk the conventions and step into the wilderness. For it is only then that you can carve out your own path.

It is our foremost duty to be happy, to respect the life that we have and to dream. True fruition is the ultimate goal and to achieve it we will have to pass through all odds. As you can see, both happiness and success are deeply and intrinsically linked to each other. Together they form the twin pillars of a life well lived.

"Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get." - Dale Carnegie

Achieve Happiness In The Rat Race

What is happiness? Is it having the job or business you like - that incidentally also pays or earns you enough for you to like it, having the most wonderful and loving wife, adorable kids, enviable home and hot set or sets of wheels, all bills paid and savings in the bank? Or is it being at peace with oneself?

One can argue that it is possible to be rich and successful and be at peace with oneself. The joke doing the rounds in social media goes like - money cannot buy happiness, but it better to cry in a mansion. If one achieves both material success and mental peace, there is nothing better than that.

But experience has shown that material success has no upper limit. By force of human nature, one looks up the ladder and is envious of those up there ahead of one. One does not look down the ladder to see how better off one is from those below. It is good to be ambitious to try to achieve the next rung of success, but the rat race leaves no time for being at peace with oneself.

Life becomes stressful as the nudge to perform is overbearing. The performance has to be better than x number of people who are also striving to achieve what one is after, or even more. At such times, and especially if one fails to achieve one's goals, it is quite possible for one to breakdown. A creeping sense of self-doubt enters the mind - am I not good enough? If you tried and failed it is no big deal. Remember for each success there are hundred failures. It is shameful not to try, but not so to fail after trying. You can try again.

When one breaks down, a whole lot of things are possible - alcohol or drug abuse, depression, self-destruction, violence or even mental unbalance can take over.
It is at such times that the need for being at peace with oneself manifests itself. No psychologist can help you if you do not help yourself by first promising yourself that you will not let things come to such a pass.

India has a host of Baba's and Guru's who cater to the constituency of people wanting to be at peace with themselves. Ancient Indian scriptures are full of ways and means for one to achieve this. In fact, scriptures of all religions show the way. If one is vigilant enough, one does not even need such help. Being at peace with one's inner self involves one simple mantra - doing something that brings one unbridled joy or satisfaction, with or without monetary considerations.

It is not necessary to go to a church or a temple. It is not even necessary to donate large sums of money. Gurudwaras of the Sikh religion all over the world have langars or kitchens open to any and every one. One can just go there and physically help by feeding the people who came there. It gives a lot of mental peace to be of help. Volunteers from all over the world come to Kolkata to help the poor and disabled by working with The Missionaries of Charity, the organization set up by Mother Teresa. They all come in search of peace.

The CEO of a giant corporation can achieve mental peace by taking time out and playing the guitar with a band he helps set up. It was always his ambition to play guitar on stage. A doctor can achieve the same by treating poor patients free by taking time out from his busy practice. The drift of the argument is that if something creates a load on your conscience; just do the reverse to lessen it. Do not keep wishes hidden because you think people will make fun of you.

Achieve mental peace whichever way you want, but do it before the rat race consumes you. It is not necessary to leave your successful life to do this. I will illustrate this point with a story from Hindu mythology. Narad Muni once asked God who was his greatest disciple, certainly expecting God to name the Muni himself. But God asked him to come down to Earth with him. There, God took him to a vast and barren field. A single farmer was tilling the field with his bullocks and singing melodies in praise of God. He, and people like him are my greatest disciples, God said, because they remember me all day without leaving or shirking their jobs, duties and families.

Achieve Success By Overcoming Self-Doubt

People failed to achieve success in many areas due in a large part to the self doubt that consumes and paralyzes them! Sadly this keeps these people from taking the actions required which may not be all that difficult in the first place! So how is it that folks can overcome the doubts that hold them back in order for them to become successful? Well it seems it would be a matter of taking that first step thus beginning the process necessary for people to overcome their own self doubt while ALSO striving toward the success that has eluded them! 3 steps is all it takes but the hardest one for many will be the first one!

Take Action

Often our own doubts are a reflection of insecurities that lead us to believe we can not become successful pursuing certain endeavors! As a result people decide consciously or otherwise not to even try and this always guarantees one thing which is those particular goals will go unfulfilled! The best way to minimize the self doubt that sometimes consumes us is to take action, move forward and focus on what it is you're doing! There's a saying that goes 'idle hands are the devils playground' and this is so true in terms of allowing doubts to fester and grow within us. Get busy, focus your energies in a productive fashion and you'll see how fast those doubts fade into the background!

Acquire Experience

The experience you acquire by taking the actions required to realize any goals and objectives you may have help dissolve any doubtfulness about your abilities. Much like riding a bike, the more you do it the better you become until you get to the point that you forgot your fears of even trying in the first place! Nothing vanquishes your doubts and fears faster than acquiring the skills necessary through actual hands on experience!

Been There, Done That

Now that you've developed the skills you formerly did not have by actually taking action you've also developed self confidence! At this point you've come full circle in terms of removing the root of your self doubt in the first place which was a lack of confidence! The new attitude you have which replaces your old fears is one of 'been there done that' and this is a mindset that will help you tackle new challenges with little hesitation!

Many people fail to achieve success quite frankly because they don't even try due to being consumed with self doubt! People who lack confidence are typically reluctant to take the necessary actions required which may place them in a better position to become successful! So it seems this lack of self confidence is what needs to be overcome and the 3 steps suggested above in most cases will provide the remedy! By taking the actions required people gain more experience, expertise and thereby the confidence needed to become successful! The first step is always the hardest but after that it's pretty much all downhill from there!

Success Takes Discipline - How to Achieve Self Discipline

Imagine getting to the stage that you do the tough things in life on auto pilot. How wonderful would that be? It takes perseverance to get to that stage. The mind does some strange things that has an impact on our decision- making process. The Sandler Sales System calls all this negative stuff floating around in our minds "Head Trash". How true is that? The self-improvement industry is chalk full of books, Cd's and online support websites of some of the biggest names in the business. All this support is directed at a never ending supply of people who want to make an improvement in their lives. Heck, I have been a supporter of the business for decades. I love it to the point that I now write about my experiences and things that I have learned along the way. As successful as I have become I still keep searching for ways to make myself better. So what does all this have to do with self discipline? Everything.

To have self discipline does not mean that you are a boring person. It does not mean that you have your life planned minute by minute. To the contrary. When you have self discipline you have a tendency to get the hard stuff done first. This affords you the time to be spontaneous. More importantly you will make decisions on what you do in your free time based on your over all goals. I believe this to be true. One of my wife's and my common goals was to own a vacation property on the ocean. Thanks to my wife's business acumen and my ability to prepare and market the property was a real team effort. It worked so well we now own two vacation properties. Too make this happen we made a huge time commitment in the form of sweat equity. All our spare time for a year was dedicated to making our dream happen. We also made the decision to rent the properties when we are not using them. We have created an income stream to pay for the properties. We use the properties as a place for us to decompress, relax and have friends by for weekends when the properties are not rented. We are building a nest egg that will help ensure we have a retirement where we chose what we can do. The reason I use this example is simple. Each property took every spare moment of our time and effort to get them to the stage we are now at. Half doing it was not an option. How good is having someone else pay for our future and present day relaxation. It all boils down to how bad you want your dreams and goals.

So how do we achieve or improve our self discipline? Here are some tips that have worked for me.

The first step is to write down a few goals that emotionally charge you. I believe when you have goals that will make you feel good, the emotional attachment will drive you to succeed. Success is imminent when you are passionate about what you want.

The second step is to enter in your diary when you are going to work toward these goals. Yes. Make an appointment with yourself. This will give you a reason to say no when something else comes along. You simply say I am working on a project right now that needs my attention. Just imagine how liberating it is when you have a commitment this strong. Success is now in your grasp.

The third step is to find an accountability partner. This will take some effort on your behalf but it will be the reinforcement of steps one and two. An accountability partner is someone who you share your goals with. I personally have one. We have an appointment at the same time each week and we discuss our progress toward our goals. So how do you feel about telling your accountability partner that you did not work toward your goal this week. Exactly. It feels awful. I have learned from experience that having the right person as an accountability partner is key. Someone who is simply a cheerleader will not do. Your accountability partner must also have realistic goals. Both of you have important things at stake. It works.

Self discipline will bring control into your decision-making process. Self discipline will remove some of the second guessing we are all guilty of. Self discipline will help you focus on what you want to accomplish. Being in control of our emotions and working toward what makes us happy is a good thing for all of us. The work can be fun too when the end result will bring you so much happiness and joy.
